Development of E-Assessment
Glossary for JISC
JISC,
in association with QCA and BECTA
have contracted 3Square Solutions to lead a team comprising AlphaPlus
Consultancy and Chris
Ricketts of The University of Plymouth to develop a glossary of e-assessment
terms for use by the UK education community. The project runs for 5 months, June through
October 2005 and is a consultative project which seeks to
reach a broad based agreement on the terminology used throughout the UK
educational community in respect of e-assessment. The development of this
glossary reflects JISCs strategic aims in that it will:
-
provide advice to institutions to enable them
to make economic, efficient and legally compliant use of ICT, respecting the
individual’s and corporate rights and responsibilities;
-
help the sector provide positive,
personalised user learning experiences and aid student progression.
The glossary of terms is
part of a wider programme of activities designed to create a greater awareness
amongst the JISC community of the characteristics, benefits and challenges of
assessment delivered by ICT. The outputs of the e-assessment programme of
activities are intended to foster the use of ICT in support of assessment in the
post-16 and HE sectors and to support positive personalised learning experiences
for students.
There
are 3 main stages of the project; an initial phase of desk research and detailed
planning for phase two, phase two of comprising a survey of e-assessment
activity and the language used, and phase three synthesising the findings into a
finished output and consulting with review panels to confirm our findings. Details
of these stages and further background on the project can be obtained in the
project plan available for download here:
E-Assessment
Glossary Project
Plan
The
key output of the project will be a database containing a glossary of
e-assessment terms, (words, phrases and acronyms) with full cross-referencing
and search capabilities. It is expected that the glossary will be made
available via the JISC website and details will be made available on the 3Square
Solutions website as they become available.
A
draft extract from the glossary in PDF format is available to download by

format of this draft please email glossary@3sq.co.uk.

Our
approach to the project is one of broad consultation to establish the current
usage of e-assessment terminology across the education community followed by
expert review to finalise definitions of terminology and confirm any
"protected" terms with specific meaning for certain groups. If
you would like to participate in the consultation process please contact John
Winkley or Gavin Busuttil-Reynaud via email or telephone.
